It’s acceptable for children to fall in love with the magic of fairy-tales while they’re young. However, as we move into upper elementary school children are slowly discouraged to hold onto their dreams and their belief in magic possibilities, this saddens me. Fairy-tales and folk tales hold rich historical, cultural, artistic meaning and value. Fairy-tales are stories told and passed down from generation to generation, they include fantastical or ethereal beings and creatures like unicorns, mermaids, witches, wizards, etc. These tales were originally written for more of an adult audience, but as they moved through new generations the depictions changed and were shared as stories of magical creatures, lands, and adventures for all ages.
I believe that we’re slowly moving back to a period of time in history where the presence and belief in the power of magic in the world around us is becoming more acceptable for all ages, adults and children alike. I believe that a huge part of this movement has been the engagement in holding onto Disney magic. Likewise, I personally believe that J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have brought the world of fantasy to life as it captures the presence of magic and adventure. These books and movies have reached such a large target audience that I believe adults have begun to reconnect with their sense of adventure and magic.
As the movement of magic, fantasy, and adventure, continues to move throughout a wider target audience and age group we’re seeing an increase in video games, books, movies, fashion, beauty, and art that are inspired by the presence of magic, fantasy, and adventure in the world around us. Believing in magic and adventure allows us to be open to opportunities and growth that we might otherwise fail to see if we focus on pure logic. I believe as the world of technology grows, and as we connect with other cultures and trends it’ll help us cultivate a sense of wonder and connect with the magic in the world around us.
When I talk about magic I’m not talking about potions, wizards, and witches …I’m talking about everyday magic. For me personally, I find everyday magic in watching the sun set and rise, looking up at the moon and the star-filled sky or finding inspiration that comes out in my art and writing, which I share to inspire and connect with others. Magic is all around us, it’s those moments that fill us with inspiration, awe, and love. It’s out there every day if we’re mindful enough to open ourselves up to the little moments that make us smile or fill us with love and inspiration.
What is something that has recently made you truly happy or filled you with inspiration? I’d love to hear in the comments about the things that inspire you and fill you with the magic of everyday life!
